From the Sale 87: Ribbed Blue and Red Bowl

Ribbed Blue and Red Bowl
Red/white mix clay; noxema blue glaze in ribs and some interior, randy's red glaze over all; 7.5" diameter and 4.5" high

This was a bowl I had made for the sale back in November. It is a simple mixing bowl to which I added ribbing on the side for a better grip.

I put blue glaze in the ribs and at the rim, then splattered a little blue on the interior. After, I dipped the whole thing in Randy's red. I cant tell whether I like the way the blue dripped from the ribs... it made this odd white/yellow lines in the ribs and then the blue a little below. I think if I were to do this again, I'd try to get the red glaze a little thinner so that more blue came through.

I'd also hold back a little more on the interior... too many swirls make rose angry

Blast From the Past - MY FIRST POTTERY!

when i was home over Thanksgiving I found this collecting dust on the mantel... the first piece of pottery I ever threw on the wheel! I must have made it in early high school... it's about 2" tall and... um... is only mildly symmetrical. Glad I've moved on :)

Please enjoy the ridiculousness

I've been too busy making potter to blog about it! IRONY

3 Rainbow Nesting Mixing Bowls

red/white clay mix; noxema blue glaze upper, randy's red glaze over entire pieces; small bowl 6" diameter and 5" tall; medium bowl 6.5" diameter and 5" high; large bowl 7.5" diameter and 5.5" high

A coworker asked me to make him some nested mixing bowls, so this was the first stab at it. Not bad, considering the diffuculty. But I am making another set that is larger/better for him :)

The small one is my favorite, because I didnt make a separated foot (so I think it will be more stable to mix in.)

The medium one was a SLIGHTLY odd shape... now that I know better how to make these, I am making them more rounded and even inside and out.

The large one was a good size but I've now made a few that are even bigger. i love making big stuff. I think it's like guys and big cars.

I had done this glaze combination on a mug a while back and it was so great i did it on these also. I put the blue on the upper part (down to about where the ridges are on the outside) then I sponged a little more blue on both the outside and inside uppers. Then I put the randy's red glaze over the whole thing.
The randy's drips down just far enough to show the bright blue, but then mixes w/ the blue to show beautiful yellow crystals. The blue sponging I had done created enough irregularity to create those cool dripping effects, a happy accident. better than the bad accidents I've had in the past...

My Studio!

I got in to the studio early enough yesterday that I was the first person there (opened at 9am, I was at the door at 8:57.) That meant that I could take pictures of the studio without being TOO awkward.

This is the first part of the studio where there are 8 wheels. I usually do my throwing on the first one on the left in this picture (because it is super quiet and more reliable than the others.)
There is also another similar set of wheels in a back room.

This is a set of shelves where they put bisque-ware (ceramics that have been fired once and are therefor very hard, but fragile) after it has come out of the kiln.

THESE ARE MY SHELVES!!!
I have spent enough time at the studio that the managers decided to give me a 'permanent' shelf instead of just using the regular class space. But I had so much stuff that they actually gave me 3 shelves. And they are almost always full to the brim. oops...

holidays

Hello my faithful friends, family, and scary stalkers,

I've gotten a few people asking if my stuff is for sale - WHY, YES IT IS! anything posted here that doesnt say it is owned (in someone's collection to put it fancy,) is potentially up for discussion. Allegedly people like giving pottery for the holidays... so, yeah.

also I can make things to order, so if you have something you want me to make, let me know! TAX FREE! (plz dont tell the IRS...)

From the Show... Part 5: Petal Bowls

Set of 5 Petal Bowls
white clay; mint glaze under randy's red; 5 pieces each 4.5" by 3"
Purchased for the Collection of an Anonymous Patron

I had made two of these bowls previously and gotten TONS of compliments on them, so I thought I'd make a few more for the sale. Of course, they were the pieces most picked-up by people and sold fairly early in the morning.

I am just fascinated by the way the glazes mix on the inside, especially given the irregularity of the clay holding it. I'm going to try to make a whole lot more of these since people like them.

The young woman who bought them said she was going to use them for parties (nuts, etc) and for eating edamame. Another woman had wanted to purchase just one, saying it would be good for a votive candle. With that in mind I'm going to make some smaller, with flatter bottoms (for candles) and larger (for snacks) and then next time I show these pieces I'll bring props to show the uses

Yay for marketing!
